Troop 194
The First 100 Years

AN ABBREVIATED HISTORY OF TROOP 194

Scout Troop 194, Detroit, was established in partnership with St. Cecilia Catholic Church on March 1, 1922. It began with 22 scouts lead by Scoutmaster William C. Greany, who served continuously in that role for 47 years (until 1970). In 1968 the Troop transferred to St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Detroit.  The troop met at St. Gregory’s for 46 years until the church closed.  In 2014 the troop moved to Gesu Catholic School where it resides today.  Since 1970, only eight Scoutmasters have served, insuring consistency of volunteer leadership service for 48 years. Throughout its 100 years of continuous service to the community, over 3000 boys and young men have enjoyed membership in Scout Troop 194 and we have produced 176 Eagle Scouts, the highest honor bestowed on a scout.

Scout Troop 194 has become a family tradition and an institution of inspiration, reverence and leadership. Twelve former members have served in church ministry; several hundred have served or now serve in the Armed Forces; eleven former members have given their lives for America.

Scout Troop 194 attributes much success to maintaining an active, annual program of activities, consistent trained leadership and always promoting boy leadership through the “Patrol Method” in basic organization. Through the years, many of our scouts have gone on to take up adult leadership roles in other Scout Troops.

As in many previous years, Scout Troop 194 has a consistent civic/community service and camping record. In 2021, the membership contributed 305 hours of Civic/Community Service; many hours of Institutional Service (school, church & neighborhood) and accumulated 90 Camping Days. All during Covid

Scout Troop 194 is the oldest, continuously active Scout Troop in the Metropolitan Detroit Area and one of the oldest in the State of Michigan. We are proud of its heritage, grateful for those who forged ahead in the spirit of the Scout Oath and Law and look forward with an imaginative vision for the future.
